In college, I worked at a yogurt shop called Luv That Yogurt! Closing shifts were nerve-wracking. I’d lock up, walk to my car, then double back to check the lock—over and over. What if I accidentally unlocked it when I checked last time? The cycle could go on for hours.
Those who’ve experienced OCD might understand the irrational fear behind this: I believed that if I left the door unlocked, someone I loved would die. That fear far outweighed the realistic fear of walking alone in a dark parking lot.
I knew I had to stop the loop. If I had created this, surely I could un-create this. I decided to turn my compulsions into a tool, designing a meditation where I visualized plugging “energetic Lego blocks” into the serotonin receptors in my brain. I committed to 90 minutes a day for 90 days.
By day 16, I could close the shop, walk to my car, and drive away—hesitantly but without turning back. After 10 more days, the fear vanished. I’d broken the loop.
That was my first-ever Medigraytion®, created in 1987. Thirty years later, in 2017, I founded Medigraytion®. And just last month, a new member inspired me to finally record an OCD-specific Medigraytion®.
I think everyone has a tiny bit of obsessive-compulsive tendencies, so I feel like this Medigraytion® is for all people. At least try it once to feel how gentle and calming it is.
